Mid-19th century papier-mâché folk art figure, likely Mr. Pickwick from Charles Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers. With his rotund form, expressive face, and gentleman’s attire, the character is immediately recognizable. Hand-modeled with original polychrome surface and inset glass eyes, mounted on a turned wood base. A rare survivor of early Victorian papier-mâché and a welcome addition to any Dickens or folk art collection. Not signed. Purchased from extensive Dickens collection in London.• Very good condition; rough and rustic as shown
